About Recovery International
Vision:
Recovery International will be the world’s premier provider of self-help training for mental health and wellness available to anyone, anywhere, anytime.
Mission Statement:
The mission of Recovery International is to use the cognitive-behavioral, peer-to-peer, self-help training system developed by Abraham Low, MD, to help individuals gain skills to lead more peaceful and productive lives.
Recovery International: Empowering Emotional Wellness Through Self-Help
- Recovery International teaches, through cognitive behavioral reframing, how to change one’s perspective of everyday situations that can work people up.
- In peer-led self-help groups, a structured 4-step Method is used to manage the emotions and symptoms of everyday stressors.
- The goal is to lead a life with more inner peace and improve relationships with ourselves and others.
- Everyone is welcome to attend if they follow the meeting guidelines.
- There are no hopeless cases.
History
Recovery International was founded in Chicago in 1937 by neuropsychiatrist Abraham Low, M.D., his patients and their families. Dr. Low found that his patients often viewed the world differently from people who were not seeking mental health treatment. He spent decades working to develop a Method to retrain the thinking of his patients. His Method challenged some of the negative and unrealistic, often fearful and/or angry, ways in which his patients had come to experience the world. He knew that if they changed their perspective of a situation, then their reactions to that situation would be different, too. If their current way of seeing an event produced emotional and/or physical symptoms, then by using the Method, they could learn to interpret an experience more calmly and realistically, eventually with fewer or no symptoms.
